Clifton Cultural Arts Center presents “Synthetic” by multi-media photographer Catherine Viox. Viox has assembled a tactile collection of work that examines biology through a lens of aesthetic pleasure, and questions the dichotomy of “natural” vs “synthetic.”
Ansel Adams, the famous documentarian, asserted “You don’t take a photograph, you make it,” insistent that what is presented as nature is actually a construction. Still, does constructed-ness, the artist’s hand, remove an image from that which is natural?
Catherine Viox’s photographs are anatomical studies, but they are also expressions of desire and imagination. Furthermore, the images question the necessity of that distinction. Using photographic processes both traditional and experimental, and presentations both two and three dimensional, the artist invites the viewer too to consider these questions and to experience the spectacle of biology.
Opening Reception on February 14 from 5 – 7pm is free and open to the public. Exhibition runs February 14 – March 13, 2020 and is viewable during regular gallery hours: Tuesday and Thursday 12 - 3pm, and Saturday 10am - 12pm.
